Northern Lights at CCV

Northern Lights is a program offered through the Community College of Vermont to nourish, support and enhance a unified system of professional development for early childhood and after school practitioners. We helped Northern Lights develop a visual identity and the digital tools to help meet their goals.

Establishing Project Goals

Northern Lights was looking for a new website to make resources and content available online, connecting professional resources and data systems in a central portal. With Clutch on board, the team established the following goals of the project:

    • Develop a visual identity and art direction for the website and marketing materials
    • Implement a responsive web design that performs well on multiple screen sizes.
    • Tailor the website to meet the needs of early childhood and after school professionals as well as those interested in entering this field.
    • Provide clear information and resources about professional development and career pathways.
    • Offer access to trainings for early childhood and after school professionals statewide.
    • Provide career advising and outreach support to professionals and to those working in the system.
    • Enhance and align the components of the professional development system so it is efficient and meaningful.

Identity Design & Art Direction

Our initial work was to create a identity system that would be unique and compliment the established Community College of Vermont brand.

Therefore, we created a logo incorporating a maple leaf found within the college logo and a graphic interpretation of aurora borealis. The result creates a visually engaging and professional logo and a stand alone element for applications such as social media.

In addition, we provided art direction to give us the graphic elements to complete visual identity of the project.

User Experience Planning

For the new website, our initial task was to further understand the needs of the organization. We then were able to determine the tools needed to support professional training, a resource library and to structure content in a meaningful way.

As a result, we provided collaborative information architecture sessions and used interactive prototypes to optimize the user experience. This provided a solid foundation for the project.

Responsive Web Design

Launched in late 2018, the new, vibrant website allows working professionals to find trainings to advance their career and the necessary resources to support their efforts. Additionally, those curious in the early childhood profession can easily understand the paths available to reach their goals.
